Hip Hop Literature
Twenty percent of all sales directly benefit the beautiful work of Hip Hop Literature, taught by Jesse Gardner at Madison High School.
Jesse connects with his students by using the lens of Hip Hop music and culture to teach writing, literature and English.
He weaves mindfulness, restorative justice and student voice eloquently into the routines, rhythms and rituals of his classroom.
By developing relationships with his students and meeting them where they are, he teaches them the power of using their voice and how it impacts those around them.
Some of his amazing lessons include a name poem that students perform in front of their class, a literary analysis on Raisin in the Sun, a music review essay and black history bio poems.
Jesse makes Madison a better place for students, and makes all teachers better educators.
We are so grateful for teachers like Jesse in the world, and are excited to support the beautiful mission of his work.
The Album
Ungrieved is a creative expression born of personal loss, written shortly after the passing of a loved one.
The album explores the waves of sorrow we collectively move through, as humanity’s shared heart continuously experiences the cycles of life and death.
Throughout the music, poetic voices from films by admired director, Andrei Tarkovsky, further echo these themes. While simple instrumentation - piano, harmonium, cello, viola, along with minimal percussion & composition, create an expansive, open body of sound.
Delicate highs, and hypnotic, heavy lows carry you into soft, vulnerable spaces of connection. Immersing you in the here & now, present in the duality of existence.
I dedicate this album to my beloved Grandmother. May the ripples of music carry her spirit through the endless sea of time.
